I use a sanding sealer diluted with about 10% denatured alcohol and soak that portion well and let it dry. Butch did a demo last year where he used kerosene on the part that was tearing out in order to "lubricate" the fibers when you turn it. It is also very important to have very sharp tools and take light cuts to help prevent tear-out.
