Why ‘guilt,’ or ‘built,’ or ‘guild?’ Why not ‘gilt,’ ‘bilt’ and ‘gild?’
Well, because we have ‘gilt’ already, meaning ‘gold decoration,’ and ‘gild,’ the verb form of that. And ‘gilded,’ which is the adverbial form of ‘gild!’ English is such a strange language.
