From your article:
How did it grow to $31.4 trillion?
The national debt has grown significantly since the early 1980s under both Republican and Democratic administrations.
The largest percentage increases to the debt occurred under Presidents Ronald Reagan and George W. Bush, both of whom enacted tax cuts that led to large deficits. [TW: This is from a liberal news source, so I'm surprised they even admitted the debt has grown under Democrats as well. I'm not surprised they wanted to simplistically point out tax cutting Republicans had bigger debt growth. As I stated above, there are numerous factors besides who is POTUS.]
Flashpoints that greatly contributed to the debt over the past 50 years include the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, the 2008 financial crisis and the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic -- the latter two prompting sweeping stimulus measures from Congress that cost trillions of dollars.
"Some of the debt is definitely policy-driven, such as in the case of tax cuts. Some of it's reactive: We had a pandemic, we had a financial crisis, and the government's going to take a position and step in," said David Thomson, the director of Sacred Heart University's history program, who has written about the U.S. debt.
What's conveniently not mentioned is the government's shameful parts in things like the financial crisis, housing crisis, excessive COVID spending, and a plethora of other ill-conceived spending initiatives. Many of those being Democrat high priority spending sprees. The reality is that both parties own the fault. Not only do they own it, the government programs they initiate often exacerbate the problems they are attempting to resolve. Driving them to expand and spend even more on various idiotic programs.
I've been wondering for at least 15 years when the debt bomb is going to wreak havoc on the nation. Many have warned about it for years, but somehow, we keep plodding along. Making the same mistakes and somehow not suffering the consequences. Thus far anyway!
We may finally be at that juncture. Here's a 4-minute video that discusses the reality of what we have and what we will no doubt face at some point in time.
