According to The Planetary Society, certified solar eclipse glasses are 100,000 times darker than ordinary sunglasses. They filter out nearly all visible light along with infrared and ultraviolet radiation. When you look through them, you should not be able to see anything but the sun itself. They're THAT dark.

Do NOT look at the sun.
Do NOT buy or use special glasses for sun viewing.
Solar blindness is totally painless, permanent and only takes a few seconds.
Use a pinhole effect and look at the image that generates on another surface.
Trees produce thousands of pinhole effects on the ground below, and that image is amazing and just as stunning as any view of the direct thing you could have, even using a special lens designed for safety.
Through such a lens, you CANNOT see the corona or any solar flares or prominences.
The pinhole image produces both Bailey's Beads and the Diamond Ring just before totality, visible on another surface.
Color of the sky is stunning.
Animals, and especially birds will panic. It is like the whole of creation erupts in a cacophany.

Strange color of the sky at eclipse peak
This was an annular eclipse when the moon is furthest away from the earth- enough so a ring of sunlight appears around the disk
