My parents had a Grundig Music Boy portable that was fairly good on medium wave. I was already aware of RNI and Caroline, but reception of the latter had been poor in the west of Scotland. However, through monies gained from hiring the transmitter to Radio Veronica when the Norderney was beached, meant that a new tower could be built.
One evening in very early June I picked up a test transmission on 1187 kHz of mainly non stop music, but there were some station identifications from an announcer who called himself Norman Barrington. He announced that the programme was going out at the same time on 773 kHz and sure enough after tuning up. there it was.
I stayed tune throughout the month, however as it was mid summer, both signals didn't really skywave in until 9 at night. Songs I remember being played a lot were I saw the light (Todd Rundgren), Take me to the Mardi Gras (Paul Simon), We gotta have peace (Curtis Mayfield) to name but three. Norman Barrington was mainly on after 9pm when I was listening, but I do remember Robin Adcroft doing evening programmes and Steve England.
In less than a month a generator problem forced them off air and the next time I heard them was in July, but as Radio Seagull. Then followed an interest, some might say an obsession, that has lasted until now!
