Re: Decommissioning of MF sites.
Quite a high number of the sites are used for other services as well - usually FM. I guess those that are MF only depends on how valuable the land they stand on is. Some were also previously shared with BBC AM services like Rayleigh in Essex so once the BBC moved out it left it with only a pointless Smooth radio relay costing unnecessary rent and in an area that can receive the service on FM as well as DAB. I bet most of the transmitters will just be left in the buildings gathering dust on those sites that are used for other services as they must have next to zero value apart from scrap metal with so many redundant ones around. As for any fines for turning these off, if there are any they will be so small in comparison with the ongoing costs saved they (Global) will happily just pay and hand the licences back. That would be my take anyway unless anyone has inside knowledge.
