Bigoted residents of Lake City, South Carolina were so outraged at President McKinley for appointing a Black Postmaster (Frazier Baker) that today, 1898, they circled Baker’s house, lit fire to it and fired over 100 bullets while Baker, his wife, and his 6 children were inside. Mr. Baker was shot to death while trying to escape the burning house. As Mrs. Baker fled carrying Julia, the baby was shot dead in her mother’s arms. Mrs. Baker and her other children managed to escape with their lives, but three of the children were wounded by gunshots and permanently maimed. A federal investigation was made, but an all-white jury refused to convict any of the 11 defendants who were implicated. Below a picture of the surviving members of the Baker family.
