My inexpensive gear journey started earlier this year. My good friend had bought a Bugera T5 amp, and was raving about how good it it was for the money.I found a good deal ($150 shipped) and decided I would give it a shot. When I got it, I plugged it in, and It didnt sound great, At first. But after changing the stock tubes out, It started sounding way better!! Next, I bought a Behringer TO800(a tubescreamer circuit) for $14 from Sweetwater. I must say it’s quite good. Then I bought a Squier Paranormal series Cabronita thinline Telecaster. It was an open box special for only $219 from Pro Audio Star, which they are still offering this deal at the time of me writing this. Go get one folks! Its a nice little guitar, with a very unique sound due to their P90’s in Jazzmaster covers. I believe these might be the same pickups offered in the J.Mascis JM.
So, one night I was playing this combination, and thinking how well this combination of gear was sounding and how much fun I was having. Then I realized,Hey, I only paid $400 for all of this.
Now, I have a lot of gear, some of it very expensive. I have multi thousand dollar instruments, and some nice amps, by Fender, Vox, and Engl, and Im finding myself using this inexpensive gear more and more. Most of the time I find myself plugging into this Bugera T5. It’s all tube, 5/1/.5 watt clean pedal platform, that sounds really good. Especially when driven by the TO800.Also this amp has a great sounding reverb circuit in it.
If you have any recommendations for inexpensive gear we would love to here your story on it.
