I recently got back my Chibson that along with a few peoples help is finally complete. Now im not trying to get into a Chibson vs Gibson, but i will say for a total of about $400 I have one hell of a playing and looking guitar that was a lot of fun to get together. I have a solid flame top on this guitar, SOLID !! Gibson is charging at least $2600 for a flame top these days.
Ive also started to really notice that there is a HUGE difference between the look of their models in catalogs and real life and the quality is hit or miss. I know normally guitars dont look exactly like the catalog, but they end up being pretty damn close usually. I was looking at 10 different SG guitars in a blue burst and id say half of them were worthy of the Gibson name tag, but the other half were poorly matched tops, terrible fretwork etc. The list goes on.
Now im not here to just talk badly about Gibson, im just making yall aware of what im reading, seeing and hearing and have been for quite sometime (A good Decade plus). I own and have owned many different Gibson guitars and I liked all of the guitars I owned. But that was back in the 90s and early early 00s. Its like someone flipped a switch and the quality dropped.
Ive read a few ex employees claim that they went from 200 guitars being build a day to 350-400 with the same size staff. But ive started to see people make excuses on Gibson guitars, like this post unboxing setup is the norm these days. You use to buy a Gibson and spend that money because the guitar would basically be stage ready upon unboxing. When I pay this type of money for a guitar I expect the basics of the setup to be completed and the guitar to not be signed off by someone who completely A) missed the issues or B) Just dont care enough.
Id love to hear some of yall chime in. As i said this is not to just rag on Gibson, this is more of where can we get answers and how can they fix this sinking ship ? Because im not seeing anyone suffer other than the customer with Gibson's current QC and what not. When the quality of something goes down, ya got to admit theres a problem before you fix the problem. If your gonna deny theres a problem, hows the company suppose to identify it ? You can love a brand, but that doesnt mean you have to love everything they make. But this accepting of Gibson's short falls is not expectable to me. The 25 year Gibson Les Paul Classic Plus Top that I own schools current production Custom Shop guitars. I love that guitar, but i know from experience that my chances of getting another Gibson this good is dicy at best.
How do you all feel about Epiphone ? Ive liked what ive seen and heard and read. I love the 59 with that finish on it, or lack of finish i should say. MG on here owns a Epi Gold Top LP made recently within the past 5 years. He likes it alot and im sure he will chime here.
