The Tyne's claim to fame
Posted by Norman Dunn on December 27, 2017, 9:21 am
I watched something on the telly recently and someone from Tyneside did not know that the Carpathia came to the rescue of the Titanic survivors or that it had been built at Swan Hunters across the river from us. Most people have seen 'Titanic' so this should interest them. Carpathia braved dangerous ice fields and diverted all steam power to her engines in her rescue mission. She arrived two hours after Titanic had sunk and rescued 705 survivors from the ship's lifeboats.
Carpathia herself was sunk on 17 July 1918 after being torpedoed by the German submarine U-55 off the Irish coast in World War I. Five of her crew died in the sinking.
