My son went out for a haircut. When he came back, he said, ‘There you go, Dad, Merry Christmas!’ I couldn’t believe it! he handed me a brand-new boxed SSD hard drive and a brand-new boxed DVD drive! How good’s that? What did I do to receive so much love?
We spent a merry time together, putting the new parts into the laptop, and transferring Windows 7 (a new install, to remove all the quirks, bugs, and other problems I could never pin down), and then loading my software programmes onto the new SSD hard drive… what a difference! the new hard drive doesn’t have any moving parts (it's like a data pen) which means that the laptop doesn’t get hot anymore… hurray! The laptop now actually blows out cool air! and, the difference in speed is incredible!
With the new DVD writer, I can once again, make all kinds of discs for friends and family; but, best of all, my two lovely, little grandbairns can once again watch their favourite DVDs with Papa. Also, the USBs are now fixed… it was easy-peasy: I did a Google search, and found a video showing how to tighten up the prongs. My laptop is now working better than when I first set it up, several Christmases ago… how good’s that?
My son said, ‘Dad, Windows 10 is much faster than Windows 7 - if you use it, you’ll really see the difference.’
I told him that the last time I had Windows 10 on my laptop, it used to have so many annoying ‘helpful’ pop-ups, that I couldn’t bear it. My son told me that it has come on a long way since then, and if anything did annoy me, I could simply switch it off.
I loaded Windows 10… what a difference from last time! My son is correct, the relentless, annoying notifications, and pushy suggestions have gone, and the programmes open up immediately. Wow!
Now, for the drawbacks: The e-mail programme for Windows 10 (Mail), didn’t have any smiley faces (emoticons), and I feel the need to let readers know if, and when, I am joking, or, when things are to be taken tongue in cheek. Also, the biggest bugbear is that Microsoft Edge Windows 10, will not allow a Google toolbar to be added. I could have lived with and worked around these 2 little problems… but, when I tried to use my upright, projection scanner, and found that it wouldn’t work with Windows 10, however much I tried… well… that was the straw that broke the camel’s back.
I did a door-slam on Windows 10, and went straight back to Windows 7.
Okay, the programmes don’t start up instantly, as with Windows 10, but I can live with that… waiting a second or two isn’t the end of the world, and it's much, much quicker than it was before adding the new drive.
