My grandfather’s grandfather was born in Jarrow, in 1843, and although he was born three years after the perambulator (pram)
was invented, his parents (pit folk)
were so poor, that it is very doubtful that he, or his siblings had one.
How did the parents transport the children from place to place? I might hear you ask… well, the mother carried them in a shawl:
Looking at the images above, I suppose we can safely say that nothing much has changed over the centuries.
Do any of the older regulars remember mother’s carrying their children about in shawls like this?
