It seems (due to door numbers) that Low Lane Row was sometimes known as Furnace Row.
Low Lane Row was a row of properties which started opposite to where the Primitive Methodist
Chapel is today, and ran down where Simpson’s Hostel used to be, until it came to Blackett Street.
High Lane Row was opposite where the Colliery School used to be, and ran down from where the
Railway Bridge is now, until it almost touched Low Lane Row. The railway came in the 1870s.
Named after: Being the lower row on the lane.
