My first 8 or 9 yrs was living in an upstairs Flat in Lyon St between Winnie Gallaghers papershop and Smiths Printers. Downstairs was Mr & Mrs Joyce with son Michael and a couple of daughters. Across the lane was the McPadden's Billy & Cilla with daughters Margaret & Jacqueline ( now Jackie Bone). They lived in William St and shared the back lane. Just along from them towards The Albert were the Campbell's upstairs to old Mr & Mrs Potter. I remember daughter Margaret Campbell who died very young.Their son went to sea and he was Brian Campbell. Margaret's older sister worked in the Harton dry cleaners on Campbell St/Argyle St corner.
In Lyon St some neighbours were a family called Lewis with a son Peter. Then there were Lee's with a son Freddy.
Across the backlane beside Bewick St were the Melia's. Mr Melia was Irish and a giant to me and he kept hens in the yard. He had sons Mick, John, Martin and Anthony. Martin had his had crushed when he worked at the pit, so from then on he had to wear a prosthetic hand.
