Yes I remember visiting Saint Paul's church when I was in primary school, in those days you had to walk (from Willington Quay), none of this getting the coach! We used the pedestrian tunnel and the escalators were huge (especially when you're only nine)and would either speed up or slow down causing you to hold on for dear life, all the children were terrified, great stuff! We were told if we didn't use the escalators we'd be given the belt! Primary schools were very different then.
What was even more brilliant was that some of the children swore that they had seen the wooden carving of Bede move, which terrified them even more than the escalators and the prospect of the belt hahaha!
We used to use the tunnel when we were teenagers to go to Riverside Park (I think it was called) from Howdon park. It was great as if you got into trouble, nobody knew you, and you could escape back across the border into Northumberland (as it was then). Senility is probably taking over here but I'm sure when you crossed the river, you were in Durham, no South Tyneside per se!
