Having just spent 2 months in South of France the condition of French Roads is far far better than ours. The verges are kept very tidy, very few potholes. The motorways and Toll roads are exelently laid. I think in the U.K. we have forgotten how to build roads. Parts if the A1 M ( & others)are like a choppy sea.
Why do our road melt? It was very hot in France but no sticky tar there. We left the south heading North to try to have less heat but no go!, even up th the Calais area there was only a minor drop in temp.
Potholes all over U.K. not a lot in the roads the we traveled on in France.
If you are planning to go down to the M11 area the A14 the A1and M11 is a nightmare with roadworks until 2020 allow an extra 30 min+.
