Here is a piece from the book, The Streets of Jarrow:
Princess Street was built in or before 1881; was previously (c.1840) Dog Bank Row, and formerly Bensham Row in c.1810. Bombed: 18:11hrs Tuesday, 2 July 1940. The south end of Princess Street was renamed Minster Parade and the north end renamed Friar Way.
New houses built on the west end 2015. In 1977, due to having no fire escape, the top floors of the maisonettes: Princess Street, part of High Street, part of Lord Street, part of Short Row and all of Queens Road, were removed, refurbished and then most of the streets mentioned were renamed.
Named after: A member of the Monarchy.
