It reminds me of the day that my mothers Lavery relatives came from Boldon Colliery to visit us in Arthur Street: Uncle Albert & aunt May Lavern. They had a very attractive daughter with them and my nana asked me to take her for a walk down to the river. We started walking down towards the Jetty and there were a group of lads damming a small stream just to the side of that huge Bede Metals shed. One of them stood up (I won't name him) and shouted Hello Donnie, is that your tart?
Needless to say I was livid and really embarrassed by it all but kept my mouth and moved on. I met that girl only once more a few years later after she was married and lived in Boldon. She will be about 82 now. I can't even remember her name but it might have been May, after her mother. I do hope that she has had a good life and not been insulted again by being called a tart. I have to say the word was well used around the colliery in those days but not quite the stigma attached to it as these days.
