I was an apprentice Fitter at Wardley & Follonsby 1960-65 and did my coal face training with Bernard Blundell,a coal face driller who lived in Cambridge AvenueHebburn. Some of the other apprentices were trained by another driller, Matty Henley also from Hebburn.
When my Mam was in Bedewell Care Home, 10 yrs ago I heard that Matty was upstairs and had dementia. I went up to see him and even though his short term memory was gone, we talked about the Pit and the men we remembered from all those years ago.
