When we first moved here to Leicestershire, the locals would often say, ‘Are you Scottish? No? Okay, Welsh? No? Okay, Irish? Oh, Geordie!’ They understand me better now as I’ve learned to round my vowels… just enough.
Sometimes surprises do happen.
I was having my hair cut in a local barber’s. The barber had a broad local Coalvillian accent, and he began:
Barber: ‘Oh, where you from?’
Barry: ‘I’m from a place near Newcastle… you’ve probably never heard of it… Hebburn.’
Barber: ‘Oh, I know it very well, my mate lives in Glen Street, near the Newtown.’
What’s the chances, eh?
And, as you say, when we meet local Geordies, they ask, ’Which part are you from?’
Mac, I used to be back and forth to Hebburn on a weekly basis, though to my shame, I don’t think I’ve been there in the last 6 years.
