A few weeks ago I was at Reading railway station, waiting for a train to Exeter. I never get it right to be near the A quiet carriage. So seeing a man in a GWR uniform I decided to ask if he could help. There was a train at the platform at the time but I didnít think much about it. As I started to speak the man help up his hand! No conversation he said. After waiting a while I realised he was in charge of the train getting ready to move. He blew his whistle and it started to move so I thought it would be ok to speak to him, but again the hand went up, with him saying no conversation. My husband had gone off to find someone who could help. When the eighth and last carriage disappeared. He then told me, when a train is on the platform he is in charge until the last carriage leaves the platform. I didnít know this, but retelling it , it made me giggle. We did get the information from a man who lived in Reading and worked at GWR for 30 years. He was born in Jarrow. Told us he loved visiting to catch up with relatives.
