I joined the Northumberland and Durham Naturalists' Trust when it was formed in 1962 and was a member of Council of the Northumberland Wildlife Trust in later years.
I joined the National Conservation Corps in 1959 and led voluntary work parties in Northumberland and then Durham and was also on the National Council and Reserves Management Committee of the British Trust for Conservation Volunteers.
On moving to North Northumberland, I kept my head down until a pollution incident in 1991 on the Tweed Estuary at Berwick affected the mute swan herd and I was on the steering committee that set up the Berwick Swan and Wildlife Trust in 1992. I was an active volunteer, rescuing wildlife until age and heavy smoking crept up on me in 2003.
Sorry for blowing my own trumpet, but I had lost track of what I did when I was a fit person.
