Your dad's story shows how hard it was for that generation, but they thought nothing of it. It was just normal so got on with it.
It was easier for us war babies in the 1950s, but we still had to take long walks to get to the school canteen half a mile away down the Colliery. We also had woodwork lessons in the Newtown School, so again back and forth unsupervised. We also thought nothing of it.
