I see that itís proposed to have a competition for the design of the replacement roof.
You cannot replace the roof with timber to the same design as original as there are no trees of the size required left in France, so they say.
To give the same interior and exterior appearance you may well use steelwork (galvanised). care would be required to ensure that the weight of the steelwork is not heavier than what the old walls will bear.
The old timber construction could have been very heavy but the speed it burnt seems to indicate a lighter structure.
Be interesting to see the designs put forward.
Why am I interested ? I used to be a steelwork designer from 1966 to 1975.
