What a nice surprise! It’s fantastic to see such an early photograph of this area before my time, thank to Peter Chrichton.
My family moved to Barnard Crescent, in 1973, and used this lovely little shop for over 40 years – thank you Norman, for uploading it.
Here we can see Nos. 209 and 210 Hedgeley Road, in 1939:
The Shaddick family had the general store, which was later Jack’s VG shop, and now Singhs off licence and general store; John Buddle and his wife Isobel ran the post office, where folk could get their rations during the war – this post office was taken over by Les and Florrie Brown, and later, by Mae and Eddie. It is now a private dwelling.

It was a Post Office and General Dealers. When Les and Florrie Brown retired they moved to a bungalow on Mountbatten Avenue, both are long gone now.
The Post Office was then taken over by Mae and Eddie, but can't remember their surname, and they did away with the provisions side and it was only a Post Office. Eddie always got dressed up at Christmas as Santa for the kids. When Eddie died Mae closed the Post Office and it was then sold and converted back to a house.
