It would appear there was plenty of work but terrible working conditions and very poor pay in those days. Even going back to my day when I started my apprenticeship in Hawthorne Leslies in 1956 i was paid £2.06 a week. When I went to sea as an Electrical Officer in 1961 I was paid £54.00 a month plus accommodation and food.
