One article I read 20 - 30 years ago was about conditions in Durham Prison in the 1800s and the speedy dispatches at the gallows. Apparently he/ she to be hanged was not given much time to think about what was happening. Quickly manacled, hooded, then a few words from the chaplain and it was all over in a few seconds. In this particular article, the hangman in his enthusiasm to get the job done quickly - manacled and hooded the chaplain by mistake. The mind boggles when you think of the hangman looking about him. "Where's the Bible basher" .and the muffled new swear words uttered by the minister. The minister, being fortunate to survive his terrifying experience, resigned his job on the spot..... I bet he did!
I wonder if more is known this occurrence?.
