Mac. I agree with a lot of what you are saying and in particular about the English usage by university qualified journalists etc and how it has deteriorated. The use of one pence instead of one penny is a good example (look on the back of the coin). An old work colleague used to say try saying that standing on one feet to get across that 'pence' is in the plural.
