In the 1950s I rode Lawson's cart horse bareback. with just a riding bridle to control it, from Monkton Village to that smithy. The only problem I had was controlling it on our return when the cable was running in its channel on the level crossing in Pelaw and the horse shied. My superb(??) horsemanship brought the horse under control and we got back to Monkton with no further issues.
