Re: Hebburn Highland Games
I believe that this was a yearly event held from about 1895. All highland games have a chieftain and I believe that, at this time, the Chieftain was Wm Mathieson esq., himself immortalised in the pipe tune 'Chieftain Wm. Mathieson of Hebburn' which appears in Glen's Collection of Highland Bagpipe Music published in the early 1900s. The composer was a winner of the Highland society of London's Gold Medal for Piobaireachd and he also composed 'The Tyne Submarine Miners' which appears in the same collection.
...and 'Yes!' I'm a piper, formerly of Hebburn, now resident in Berkshire.
