Wasn't it a wonderful experience to find you could extract sound from virtually nothing. No power, no batteries and no tuning (only one programme anyway) At the allotment where I used to twiddle the cats whisker, I can remember with absolute amazement the sense of achievement when a voice or music was suddenly "there" - out of nowhere, Yes, huge aerials, large home made coils wrapped around slotted pieces of cardboard with just the right number of turns. A poker stuck in the ground for an earth. Ahhh joy. I have seen professionally made crystal sets all encased in varnished wooden boxes - but nothing beats the piece of ply fitted into an old shoe box. with "thingies" stuck in place. Then technology had to come along and ruin everything and take the magic away - or did we all just sadly grow up?.
