I was not very good at school and only got better at maths thanks to Pop Armstrong.
Before leaving Clegwell in December 1957 I started at Jarrow Tech. Doing J1 then progressed on to J2 before starting Structural Engineering courses at Newcastle Bath Lane College and then Rutherford College which is now part of Newcastle University.
The courses were S1,2 &3 then A1, A2 which was a degree level but engineering based.
I cannot remember getting any Certificates for those but have a vague memory trying to get them some years later.
If I had stayed living on Tyneside I would have become a member of the Institute of Structural Engineers and had letters after my name.
Regretfully that fell through because I did not know that you had to get the further qualifications and do the Institute exam at the collage you originally qualified at.
This I didn’t discover until after I attended courses and lectures at Leeds Uni.
Not that I mattered in the long run as I went off on the financial side of structural engineering.
