I have to renew mine every 3 years but no driving test required as yet.
I accept that I am not as good a driver as as I was years ago as now more careful. I think that this is the case with most older drivers. The lockdown caused lack of practice.
There are quite a lot of older drivers that I see who should probably giving up driving in a few years. Most of these drive too slow on main roads like the A59 to the west of Harrogate, driving at 40 mph or less. On that road I usually try to drive with the traffic flow at about 50-55 mph. If no traffic about 60 about the best but 55 best for fuel.
If you start restricting older drivers it could cause massive problem for the catering trade in our area as loads of us oldies go out the various eating places in the area ,like Stump Cross Caverns. They help to keep them open during the week.
A lot of traffic and other problems are caused by BAD drivers of all ages. A few weeks ago travelling on the A59 and A61 there was an Audi driver up my rear end itching to be past. The amount of traffic and the road layout prohibited any overtaking for about 6-8 miles.
As I am now 81 I hope to get in another 5-6 years driving and towing my caravan. There could be a crunch if I have to get an automatic car just because of the cost of changing.
