Part of the problem was people booking pitches and then cancelling last minute but that has been partially improved by booking fees being introduced.
However there are now a lot more people visiting sites in popular areas like the Northumberland coast.
The catering industry has responded and there are a lot more cafe’s etc. to cater for the amount of visitors.
Getting close to holiday time has always been difficult so we avoid going then.
It just seems that there is now a lot more people taking up camping of all types maybe switching from trips abroad to staying in the U.K.l
Years ago you could just turn up at a site and it would have a pitch. That changed about 10 or so years ago and you then had to pre book.
The change has probably come about by the vast improvement in camping equipment allowing more to take up the camping lark.
The cost of holidays hotel or boarding house to us has always been very expensive but we were brought up with camping holidays. I was taken camping when Dad bought his first car in about 1950- 1953. There was a group of 6-8 families that went together. Of course being in the Boy Scouts camping was the norm.
A visit to a hotel is just a stop gap thing. Two nights enough usually unless the stay is a means to an end when involved in a sporting activity.
Looking at the equipment now available for camping there is a vast difference in price range.
A family tent say for four people starts at about £400 plus all the other items that are required, and at the top end a big Motorhome £100,000 +++. Some have to be seen to be believed!
