The guildhall was built by Robrt Trollop. In those days a Trollop was a loose woman. So when he died they refused to bury him in Newcastle. They sent him to St Mary's on the Gateshead side facing his beloved guildhall. However, someone inscribed on his tombstone, Here lies Robert Trollop who made yon stones roll up. When death took his soul up, his body filled this hole up.(true!)
