This photo shows a busy Seaburn Beach but Marsden and Shields were just as crowded before we started flying off to Spain and the Med. No leisure wear in those days. Some of those people could have been on one of the Hebburn Methodist chapel trips.
No,not modesty Joseph, it was simple economics. A separate set of clothes for an odd day at the beach simply wasn't viable for most people. It was the hot summer of '76 while he was holidaying at my home in West Sussex before an uncle of mine discovered leisurewear. He was so hot he asked me to go and buy him some of those "T-shirt things" that I was wearing. I also came back with a pair of cotton slacks so he could change out of his mainly woollen trousers.
