Yes Just Passing, I agree. Funnily enough I was reading an article a few weeks back, again on MSN News (I read it a lot) about the best cities in the world to live and I think three of the top ten were German. Yes they did rebuild quickly after the Great War, as the UK and Americans understood the war indemnity costs, sadly the French did not, hence Hitler's desire to humiliate them (which he did, the surrender signing etc). I've been to Germany a few times and always found them to be great.
I had a great book about Hitler v Stalin, but left it in a boarding house in the Lake District; so if you're ever staying in a boarding house in the Lake District and see that book on a shelf, it's probably mine!
There's a great series shown on PBS America called, 'the War'; it runs over fourteen episodes, the first episode is a bit naff, but bear with it, as it's very good, and demonstrates the hell Americans went through fighting in various campaigns.
After World War II the prospect of the UK becoming an American state was mooted, would that have been to our benefit, that's difficult to say.
As for EU funding, yes now that all of the industry has gone, the North East will suffer, but don't they already? Say what you like about David Cameron, he offered a vote that no other world leader who have been brave enough to do, and the issue has been decided democratically, for either good or bad, time will tell. Italy now want out of the EU, and many eastern states are becoming increasingly hostile. In Holland last year, membership of the Eu was a close run thing, as for most of the French elections. Even Scandinavian countries are becoming less tolerate!
