Hi Norman. The short answer is that we didn't survive, The town died along with the Companies that left. Many (Young) families moved out to seek work in other parts of the UK and for me abroad. Hebburn is now one big housing estate with many families only going there to sleep and working outside the town.
Alan. I think Durastic were an industrial flooring company and did a lot of work on factory floors, ships acommidation and also anti slip coating of the outside decking (Could be wrong)
Durastic was along the low road just past where the coal conveyor went over the road, before Dugies Tavern or was it the White Lead in them days? I think that their main jobs were on ship but they did industrial floors. They did the floors in the assembley shops at Burgess when I worked there as the Works Engineer way back in the past, Burgess also gone overseas somewhere
