I was thinking about Lord Louis Francis Albert Victor Nicholas Mountbatten: |
Inventor. Admiral of the Fleet The Right Honourable, 1st Earl Mountbatten of Burma, KG, GCB, OM, GCSI, GCIE, GCVO, DSO, PC, FRS. First Sea Lord. Viceroy and Governor-General of India, etc., etc. Served in both WWI & WWII.
Louis Mountbatten was an uncle of Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, and second cousin once removed of Queen Elizabeth II.
Yet, with all these credentials, and all his pull and wealth, he stood shoulder-to-shoulder with the men he adored, the men of his ship, HMS Kelly. He played sport with them at the local Leslie's Sports Ground, and even resided at the local County Hotel, Hebburn.
What other Royal throughout history can you recall that would mix with us commoners in this way?
He used to attend the Kelly graves memorials in remembrance of his good friends, and even used to inspect the sea cadets at T. S. Kelly, Hebburn - how good's that? What a gentleman.
