Hello John, |
The horses and ponies, like many other workers of those times, lived in different circumstances than would be allowed today. As working horses, I’m not sure that any of them ever had the pleasure of grazing; my dad told me that in the 20s, he remembers old Mr George Edmunds, kept his horse in the yard at the back of his fruit shop. Probably doing its daily rounds was the only form of exercise it knew.
Alas, many horses were mere skin and bone, and many died on the streets. I'm sure some other regulars will remember such sad stories.
Our good friend Alex Baker remembered: “Carrahar's field was once used by the colliery as a training ground for the ponies. A small track circulated the field originally and the ponies were trained to pull the tubs & trucks etc., before disappearing down the pit.”
So very sad.
