I remember Mr Laidler he live at Victoria Road West. He had two daughters I think their names were Judith and Valerie, If my memory is correct I think Mrs Laidler was a teacher.

You are correct Sheila he also had a son Barry who went to J.G.S.from 1946 he was a good friend of mine as I lived 4 doors from him at 119.

Don - The Edna Nicod on the left must be a distant relation of mine through marr.

The Nicod family came originally from Paris, France.
A Charles Nicod married a London Girl and started the UK Nicod family.

Their sons Alfred and Joseph were with A. Reyrolle in the early days and there were 11 children of Alfred's by 1911 and 2 of Joseph's and that's where this Edna in the photo could be from maybe.

My Edna Nicod was Edna E. Morris before marr. and she would have been able 46 in 1950.

So I think that its possible that this Edna Nicod is from one of my Edna's husband Ernie's brothers. or Joseph Nicods family.

of course Nicod could be her married name.

Anyway I shall add her into my family research on the Nicod's.

The Edna Nicod and Maggie Lee could well be cousins of sorts. My Grandmother was a Annie Morris (St. Rollox St.) one sister Edna married a Nicod. Another sister married a Thompson and their daughter Thelma married a Billy Lee (Boys Brigade and High Land Row Methodist Church)
The Billy Lee whoes photo it is is from the same Lee’s family if I remember.

Did a bit of research last night and as far as I can find there was no other Edna Nicod other than my Great Aunt and I doubt that she would be working in the 50’s as she had 3 children, the eldest one got married in 1953.

It is possible that the Edna Nicod name is wrong she may be an Edna or a Nicod. Of course her name Edna may be just one of her names as the Nicod’s tended to have at least 2 forenames so this Edna could have been her middle name.

I have a photo of all the Morris sisters taken in 1958 with Edna Nicod on it. So I will dig it out and compare the faces.

As with all family research, one is guided by the info. That is available and it can be wrong.

Are well more research required on the Nicod and Lee’s. I don’t like unanswered questions so that for the To Doo file.

Just looked at a photo of all the Morris sisters taken in 1956 which has Edna Nicod on it. There is facial resemblance but Edna is partially hidden behind my Uncle Barney.

Maybe the photo posted is earlier than the 50’s. It’s just I don’t think my Edna would have been working being a married woman with 3 children. It does’nt stack up with their generation.

Edna Nicod who is on the 1950s photograph was not married she was the sister of Fred Nicod who lived on Victoria road west originally Newton Terrace.
I worked in Reyrolles in the early 1950s and remember all those on the photo,actually Maggie Lee was Mrs Walton To me as I used to take messages to her when I workedi in the Newtown works,so I always addressed her as Mrs Walton.her three nieces also worked for her and they were called Lee.so I'm assumming that Billy Lee who has provided the photo was their brother.Btw the Nicods were related to the Cummings family.hope this is useful info.

Fred must have been Harry Nicod's Dad. Harry went to my school. Am I right Lilian?
No relation to my Cummings line found so far who all came from Durham City and the pit villages around but I bet if I could fill in the years after the 1911 census that we would make some progress.

Fred and his wife were elderly when We lived opposite them so didn't know their family.
Terry Cummings had a website with all of his family tree he may have had lots of info on the Nicod family as his mother was Fred and Edna's cousin,If my memory serves me right.

Lilian I think Terry was a Cummins. His mother Vi was one of Fred’s sisters. I remember Fred had a son and two daughters. I remember his younger daughter was named Noreen. His son married Maureen Taylor. Maureen’s parents had the fish shop in Reed Avenue, their house attached to the shop was Wickham Road.. Terry’s website was most interesting, but I can’t find it now. You used to be able to access it from Mikes site.

I seem to remember Terry went into the history and it seems both spelling were used in the past. I will try and find the site with Barry’s kind help. Do you remember Fred Nicod always wore a bow tie.

Cummins/Cummings

Same in my line Lillian. Cummings and Cummins both used in the late 1700's with one brother using Cummins another Cummings. And the different versions continuing through the 1800's.
A mixture of illiteracy and mistakes by the census people and by the clergy on marriage documents. Many of the early certs wre signed with a cross!
However my lot have managed to keep Cummings since about 1890. We always joked that my Grandad took the g because it sounded posh. His Dad didnt have a g.

Lillian There were Nicod’s that lived at I think 168 Victoria Road 1911 the Head was Joesph Nicod the brother of Alfred ? Nicod. Who was my Aunt Edna’s father in Law.

Know that I know the link I must find out why this Edna didn’t show up last night. Probably finger trouble on my part.

When I was reserching my old address I found Joseph Nicod living at 14,Newton Terrace,he was born in 1866 died in 1929
Which could have changed to 109,Victoria road west in later years.when Fred lived there.

I checked the 1910 Rates List and found
Joseph Nicod 1 Whiteburn St
William Laidler 2 Whiteburn St

No other Nicod's on the List.,

My three sisters worked for Maggie Lee, Florrie, Audrey, and Muriel. The 300 woman who worked in the transformer room all called her by her maiden name, the rest of the works she was known as Mrs Walton. My Wife Ellen {Conway} also worked there before we were married.

Thanks folks for the info will check it out. There are 2 Nicod families in Hebburn on the 1911 Census. If only one is one the 1910 rates list the other may have just moved there from ???.

Will have a look ASAP but got a lot of work on stocking up the wood store.
I’ve been using the big chain saw and heavy Axe or spllitter today. Just needed to get some exercise. I’ve found that my fitness drops off rapidly if I don’t exercise in some form 2 or 3 x week. I think it’s a kickback from cycling the length of Hebburn to get to Clegga and Palmers before I got a car. Each to his own.

The reason I started to research my old address was when a mrs Stark told me that her husband was born there,and those houses were built for the managers of Palmers and he lived in 5,Newton terrace,which of course had changed to Victoria road west.
Thanks Bill for the smashing photograph I well remember your lovely sisters,and in the background I spotted another girl called Gladys Cowell,I left in 1954 but still remember some of the girls and older women who are no longer with us.

I remember Mr & Mrs Nicod who lived in Buchanan Street. I remember Mrs Nicod was called Edna and was Thompson before marriage. I am not sure if Mr Nicod was named Ernie, I do remember he was a very good artist and did beautiful paintings. Their three children were Benny, Beryl and David. I know Benny died but the others will now be in their early eighties I think. Their is a photo of Edna at the Buchanan Street Party celebrating the coronation in 1953.

Former Reyrolle workers at the firm's Hebburn plant continue to regale us with memories from a time when thousands worked in heavy industry.

Reg Miller, of Stocksfield, saw our article about Reyrolle and wrote: "Coming out of the Royal Navy in 1947, I married Dorothy Nicod, whose father, Fred, got me a job as an apprentice draughtsman in Reyrolle.

"His father, I think Alfred Nicod, and Alphonse Reyrolle were together at the original works in London. They moved north together and all the Nicod family worked at the Hebburn plant.

"There was what we called 'the bottom works' beside the railway station, the 'top works' across the railway line, the Bushing Company, the short-circuit testing station and next to that the high-voltage testing station was built.

"Reyrolle built a number of houses in Hebburn and rented them to employees.

"A range of switchgear was manufactured, from 415 volts, flameproof for the mines, and up to equipment for outdoor substations.

"While in the engineering department my team did all the protection and control diagrams for the two Stella power stations and Blyth power station.

"During the construction for Stella South a fault occurred, closing the generators down. Dunston power station could not carry the load and also closed down. There was a complete blackout on Tyneside.

"I left Reyrolle in 1965 and joined Merz and McLellan, the Newcastle consultant engineers."

Lewis Felton, 77, of Felling, never worked at Reyrolle, but he played for the junior football team and was in the team photo used in the previous two Reyrolle stories, along with the late Manchester United goalkeeper Ray Wood. …

While the first decade of the twentieth century was a successful time for the Company, they were mixed years for the Reyrolle family. Alphonse's sister Eleanor took ill whilst visiting him, and later died in a private hospital in Newcastle.
Two years later, 1906 was a happier time, when Alphonse returned to France to marry Marguerite Mongandon in Paris. Marguerite - a dressmaker - was four years younger than Alphonse and was born in the Raveu (Nieure) area of France. Gustav Reyrolle, a furniture salesman and younger brother of Alphonse was the French equivalent of the 'Best Man'.
Alphonse and his wife returned to Newcastle to live in Grindon House, a residence further along Beechgrove Road, Elswick. Marguerite later returned to Paris where their son Armand Fernand was born the following year.
On returning to Newcastle, Marguerite Reyrolle looked for a nursemaid for her young child. Charlotte Nicod, daughter of Alf Nicod, got the job. She lived with the Reyrolle family whilst looking after their son. In 1918 Charlotte married and left Hebburn to live in America.
Marguerite Reyrolle did not play a major part in the local community but Alfred Pawsey (2000) points out that the newly installed electric lighting and X-ray apparatus at Hebburn's Ellison Hall Infirmary was switched on by Mrs Reyrolle in November 1913.
In 1911, Alphonse was admitted as a member of the Institution of Electrical Engineers (now the Institute of Engineering and Technology). Research indicates that he did not present any engineering certificates or technical paper, so he must have been admitted on the strength of his experience and perhaps the recommendation of the Institute's Vice President - Charles Merz.

THE strands thrown out by one of South Tyneside's most famous industrial names continue to amaze.
In this case, they open another small window into the life of the Reyrolle family – most specifically Alphonse Reyrolle's son and heir, Armand Fernand.
Former South Shields man Bob Owen, now in Huddersfield, is, as you may know, the author of a book on Reyrolle's, where he himself served an apprenticeship in his younger days.
Bob's book, The Reyrolle Story, is being serialised online at www.openwriting.com, and it has resulted in some interesting feedback, he tells me.
However, he was especially amazed and thrilled to hear from a lady, Joan Butler, in Arizona in the United States.
Her mother, it transpired, had actually been nanny to the young Armand Fernand who, at the outset of Bob's researches into the family, had initially been a more shadowy figure than his more famous father.
She was Charlotte Nicod Robbie, who was born in 1897 and died only as late as 1992.
It turns out that Joan's grandfather, Alfred Nicod, was one of Reyrolle's three original employees, and worked for him for 48 years.
Eight of her Nicod uncles also worked for the firm.
Says Bob: "The large Nicod family was very well known in Reyrolle's."

Ernie and Edna Nicod were my Aunt and Uncle. I used to visit them in Buchanan St.

Edna was one of my Grandmothers younger Morris sisters.

Bennie died but up to last June Beryl and David were still alive.

I have tried to visit Beryl about 4x but she has usually been out Grannying. So I have not seen her since Dad’s sister died some years ago.

The Thomson name comes from another sister of Edna, Lettie who married Arthur Thompson and their daughter Thelma married into the Lee family High Lane Row and Boys Brigade conn.

Now I had forgotten about Earnie’s artistic talents until you mentioned it.

Is the photo of 1953 Buchanan St. party on Norman’s website ?. If so it could have come from my collection of family photos.

I have 2 or 3 photo,s of Edna and Ernies Wedding way back.

As I have mentioned a while back, Thelma was married to my Uncle Billy (my Mom's brother). Reading these threads it's amazing the cross connection of families.

That’s my Aunt Edna Nicod nee Morris just to the left of the chap in the flat cap at the window.

Great pic again.

The Nicod, Lee thread has added a lot to,my knowledge of Reyrolle’s. The board sticks again.

That is the photo I remembered Norman. In front of the window is Mr Cummins/Cummings next to him is Edna Nicod then Mrs Cummins/Cummings and next Lady is Mrs Phillips, Anne Shaw’s mother. Anne visits the board. I wonder if she has seen the photo.
