I just attributed her update problem with the same one I had on W7 from July 2015 through Feb 2016. Once microsoft started sending out their W10 update notices they really screwed up the W7 updater. It would take my pc an hour to find the updates and then close to 30 minutes to download them. At that time there were others in the microsoft W7 general usenet group complaining it was taking anywhere between 4 to 24 hours to find and download the monthly updates.
I considered myself lucky that it was only taking an hour for my pc to update.
Anyway her update problems did start a month or 2 before the fan problem and the update problem just corrected itself last month so that was probably the cause of her problem.
I'll ask her to check her cpu usage if her fan comes on high again or rather I'll probably just have her call me and have me come check it out because I'm pretty sure she won't be able to figure out what's using cpu.
