One just needs to know to google legitimate free antivirus and then check the reviews for them to see if there are any problems with any of them before downloading them.
Most people who know nothing about pc's just automatically believe that every scanner offered to them is legitimate and it's only after downloading it that they find out that besides being required to pay to remove the fake viruses the scanner has found that the download of the scanner also included malware in it.
I use microsoft essentials because it works but I always do a weekly scan with malwarebytes too which will find anything bad that microsoft essential might not have found. As it is, I have as of yet for either scanner to detect anything bad on my W7 pc but then I never click onto unknown links in my email or on facebook or on a couple chat sites I visit.
