As Lori stated, you should try another browser in order to see if it's a firefox problem or a problem with your pc. If you don't want to install Chrome then just try IE to see if that works, if it does then the problem is with firefox or it could be a problem with Avast blocking firefox.
Also are you using the built in firewall or are you using a separate program as your firewall. It could be that your firewall is blocking firefox.
If Avast or your firewall is blocking firefox then my guest is that they both saw that you were using an outdated insecure version of firefox and for some reason isn't recognizing that you've now installed an updated firefox. If you didn't reboot after installing firefox then that could be why neither is recognizing your new secure version of firefox.
