Stravinsky ballet works are effectively symphonic poems when performed independently to the ballet

They are orchestral works designed to tell a story/paint a picture via music . Hence it is completely fair to judge it by the same standard as any other symphonic poem. If Stravinsky didn't try to promote it as an individual piece of music I would have zero complaints about the work
