Have never really given Newman a fair shake. Heard bits and pieces of albums (my dad's a fan) but never sat down and actually listened. I like his songwriting but his voice/delivery kind of kills it for me. So I'm into "Nilsson Sings Newman" and Nina Simone's version of "Think It's Gonna Rain Today". Used to hang out with his nephew around the time I graduated high school, who was a close friend of my gf at the time.
The Flying Burrito Bros albums and "Sweetheart of the Rodeo" are good for what they are, but not really my cuppa tea.
"Mothership Connection" is a classic from beginning to end and the best true Parliament album (I prefer "Osmium" but basically consider it a Funkadelic album).
I've tried with "36 Chambers", "Liquid Swords" and the other highly regarded Wu Tang solo albums but they generally bore me. All I care about are OBD's solo albums, which are great (even the posthumous "A Son Unique", which tends to get overlooked).
"Ascension" is okay and fairly tame and organized as far as free jazz is concerned but not really my thing (very selective when it comes to free jazz).
