I mis-phrased by saying "early music". I actually meant "in the same period as early music". Anyways, my main point is that Western Art Music wasn't the only where polyphony or harmony existed at the time. Traditional Filipino and Indian music both feature polyphony (and Indian classical does have harmony, for one example), though it sounds different than in Western music. I will say, however, that polyphony and harmony play very different roles in these musical traditions. Western music is driven by harmony in many ways, and the same cannot be said of Indian music. I guess it depends on how integral it is to the form of music.
