I saw it last month. I don't really agree that the big, tragic event is so out there and unbelievable. It strikes me as very similar to someone leaving the flue closed and killing their family via carbon monoxide poisoning, which has happened to plenty of people. It's certainly more Hollywood than a divorce, but I wouldn't call it manufactured.
That said, I'd still rate the movie similarly to you, maybe closer to 4 stars than 3.5. The performances are uniformly great, but it veers much closer to misery porn than Lonergan's first two movies, which are both modern classics.
