"I'm not trying to say that any Police songs suck that much, because none do. What I am trying to say is that Sting's songs are often not very melodically captivating or complex - they are easy to remember and pretty entertaining, sure, but that's more due to great production and playing or the songs' incessantly repetitive nature than to a genuine nerve that the melodies strike in your heart. I mean, consider all the unnecessarily inflated codas in the band's catalogue: 'So Lonely', 'Message in a Bottle', 'Don't Stand So Close to Me', and the list goes on and on. All these songs have extremely simple 5-second-long choruses, too, so even a 45-second coda is too long. Another thing I noticed is that almost never does a Police song have both a great chorus and great verses, and if by chance it does, then they're probably the same thinly veiled melody (again, see 'Don't Stand So Close to Me'). In short, these guys may be pretty good, but they have no business being compared to the Beatles, and if my self-proclaimed ultimate test (judging the melody apart from the instrumental prowess and production) were applied to Police songs, half of them would end up completely uninteresting. In contrast, 90% of all Beatles songs, even if hummed by some street bum, would still sound like some of the greatest musical creations ever."
Although I do disagree with him that there are Police songs that DO suck.
I don't really get how Police is considered a 4 star band by George or understand how people consider them even a 3 star band
