Supertramp: It's in the eye of the beholder whether they should be considered a dumbed-down Genesis or the thinking man's REO Speedwagon. They skirted the edges of progressive rock in the mid 1970s, before settling on being a pop band with pith; less complicated but hookier than Genesis or Camel, but not as fun or danceable as ELO. The 1974 - 1979 albums are the ones to explore; everything else is for the dedicated fan. A good band to get into by seeking out the original vinyl records in playable condition - these four albums are as common as they come and can be had for pennies. Plus the wacky cover art.
By the mid-'80s they settled into a sound that most consider established them as the founders of dream-pop, for whatever that's worth. I would not consider myself a real fan, but I do enjoy the 1980s albums for historical and nostalgic purposes.
One of the pillars of progressive rock. Much of what was good about the genre (OK, IMO) since 1980 can be directly attributed to Henry Cow and Magma. The first album is a great place to start for the uninitiated, as it's their most "Canterbury" and therefore most accessible sounding. It's the album that most clearly shows their late-60s Mothers of Invention influences, too.
